Key words:cultural heritage; identity; historical site; safeguard; globalization; culture transform英文:
Cultural heritage – historical buildings, artifacts or even customs – is a miniature of local culture connecting modern people to the ancient past, allowing us to acquire a cultural and historical identity. Mysterious, splendid, beautiful, cultural heritage is always a dreamland to archaeologists, artists, travelers and most of us.
However, as you step into the streets in China, all that rush in are standardized buildings holding masses of people, shops selling diverse kinds of featureless souvenirs and foods, even in a so-called historical site. Old cities disappear. Classic gardens vanish. Even the remaining ruins are torn to pieces. As a result, over 600 cities in China look exactly the same. We may find excuses that we lack experience in urban development, that we need to survive and thrive, yet no one can deny the fact that our cultural heritage, the witness of our history, is being erased and corrupted. It's a pity that skyscrapers are set up while some cultural heritages go to wrack and ruin.
Why don't we cherish them, our spiritual home and our civilization? Without cultural heritages, we would be rendered absolutely rootless unaware of whom we are and where we come from, and we would find it hard to cope with challenges at present and in the future. Therefore, it is high time that we made concerted efforts to enhance confidence in our traditional culture.
Valuing Chinese characters and the art of calligraphy is the first step to realizing "cultural consciousness". Fortunately, the Ministry of Education has issued a regulation asking schools to hold at least one calligraphy class a week from grade three to six. Conditions permitting, such classes are supposed to start in some regions from now on. As far as I am concerned, the timely move by the Ministry of Education will safeguard traditional culture at a time when the world is undergoing cultural transformation.
