哈佛大學(xué)建立于1636年，最早由馬薩諸塞州殖民地立法機關(guān)創(chuàng)建，初名“新市民學(xué)院”。為了紀(jì)念在成立初期給予學(xué)院慷慨支持的約翰·哈佛牧師，學(xué)校于1639年3月更名為“哈佛學(xué)院（Harvard College）”。1780年，哈佛學(xué)院正式改稱“哈佛大學(xué)”。
